What is Hapé?
Hapé is the preparation of powdered medicinal herbs which is administered through the nose as a snuff. The effects are experienced promptly and intensely and it elicits feelings of alertness and elevation. Hapé is typically made with mapacho (Aztec tobacco, which contains 9 times the nicotine of common tobacco) as a base, and other plant medicines mixed in for various effects.
This ancient practice of consuming powdered plant medicines through the nose dates back from the pre-Columbian days and was first observed among the indigenous tribes of Brazil. To these tribes, hapé is a sacred shamanic snuff medicine with extensive healing and other powers. Other uses include inducing visions, increasing energy, and heightening the senses with the aromatic fragrance of the plants used in the blend.
Hapé is made from different medicinal plants for different purposes. Several tribes traditionally use hape, and they each produce their own specific Hapé blends. These tribes include but are not limited to the Katukina, Yawanawa, Kaxinawa, Nukini, Kuntanawa, Apurinã, Ashaninka, and Matses.
Hapé History
In 1577 doctor and botanist Francisco Hernández de Boncalo introduced the herbal snuff in Europe and the elites of that time often took snuff as a headache treatment. During the 18th century, inhaling snuff became fashionable among the European aristocracy.
Today, indigenous tribes in the Amazon basin continue to use hapé in all aspects of life, from formal rituals, to social gatherings, to simply tuning into Nature and welcoming the healing power of sacred plant medicines.
The ritual use of hapé was introduced to the West by traveling shamans through ayahuasca ceremonies, as well as by visitors who have spent time in the jungle with indigenous communities. Ritual hapé use is making its way around the world.

Article:
The most common rapé is made from three main components, ash (from different sacred trees), tobacco and medicinal plants (these can be medicinal roots or leaves). These three components, once dry and crushed, are mixed and then filtered with cloth to have a fine material, that does not hurt the nostrils.
The name of the raphe as the plants, ashes and tobacco used, will vary according to the tribe that prepares them. Each typeof rapeh has its own proportions of the main components, but it also varies a lot from who prepares it, as sometimes a medicinal plant can change.
It is very important to take into account that when the rapehsare prepared, an intention is placed on them that determines the type of rapeh that is going to be prepared, for example a cure or concentration rapeh, these will differ with the plants that are used, as an example you can make a rapeh tsunu(which is an ash) but with the intention of healing, so the mixture of tobacco and medicinal plants is more charged, orelse a rapeh tsunu to concentrate what will have other proportions of the mixture as well as different plants that the cure raphe, although they have the same name.
It must also be taken into account that the proportions takenand the way the raphe is blown greatly influences the intention, since there are blows to concentrate and blows to lead to a cure regardless of the raphe, there is always the possibility that any raphe will lead us to a purge or a state of concentration, since it varies a lot from the sensitivity of each person, that is why it is recommended to acquire rapehes made by indigenous people who may be aware of the prayer they bring, of the plants that were used, and thus have a process more conscious with rapeh, as it is also very important to know from whom we receive a blow, as this greatly influences the medicine energetically.
Understanding the origin of the types of rapeh and its preparation helps us to study the different effects that we can experience with it, which, however, are not linked to a single type of effect. In general it is possible to experience all kinds of effects in a single type of rapeh, but it should be mentioned that each rapeh has a more pronounced effect than another, as this is linked to the properties of the different plants with which the rapehs can be made.
